Background & History

Makro Self Service Wholesalers began trading in the United Kingdom in May 1971 at Eccles in Manchester. Makro UK operates a network of 30 purpose built Cash and Carry's across the country, serving the UK's major cities and has a company turnover in excess of £1 billion. Makro UK is a part of Metro Cash and Carry the international market leader in self-service wholesale.

On January 1st 1998, METRO Group acquired the European Cash and Carry business of SHV Makro, in which METRO Group already held a 40% stake. The international Metro Cash and Carry network covers over 500 self service wholesale stores worldwide. Under the brand Metro and Makro, 20 million commercial customers worldwide are offered access to a selection of up to 50,000 products.

Makro's Head Office is based in Manchester, where there are over 200 employees in 7 Departments. The stores are located in every major city in easy accessible locations. Makro has got a sales area of over 3 Million sq.ft. Makro launches over 400 different promotions every fortnight through its publication Makro Mail. The Makro Mail starts every other Wednesday and is posted to over 1 Million registered businesses every fortnight.

At the head of the stores is qualified management supported by highly motivated teams.
