Application Process

How do I apply?
By completing the online application form in the 'How to apply' section of our website.

What qualifications do I need to apply?
You will need a minimum 2:1 in a business related degree.

What is the closing date for applications?
The closing date for 2008 applications is Wednesday 5th March 2008.

Can I apply now and defer my start date?
No as we only recruit for one year's intake at a time.

Do you accept paper copies of your application form?
No. We handle all our applications online as it speeds up the process for all concerned.

Are existing Metro/Makro employees eligible to apply?
Yes, we encourage applications from suitably qualified people who also have knowledge of the Metro/Makro business.

Do I have to be eligible to work in the UK to apply for the scheme?
Yes. It is your responsibility to ensure you are eligible to work in the UK.

How will I know that you are dealing with my application?
We will send an email confirmation once we receive your completed application form.

Who do I contact if I have further questions on the application process/scheme?

If I am unsuccessful this time, can I reapply?
No. We do not encourage people to apply a second time.

Is there an age limit for applicants?
No. We welcome applications regardless of your age.

Are there undergraduate placements and work experience available?
Yes.  We have a limited number of internships available.  The minimum period is 12 weeks.  If you are interested contact recruitment.graduate@makro.co.uk.

Selection process

How long does the recruitment process take?
From initial selection day to job offer the whole process should take no longer than 6 weeks.

What will the selection days involve?
A combination of group exercises, practical tasks, psychometric tests and interviews.  Further details can be found in the ‘And what happens next’ section of the website.

Do you reimburse expenses incurred during the recruitment process?
Yes we will reimburse reasonable expenses.  However, please contact recruitment.graduate@makro.co.uk if your expenses are likely to exceed £100.

What should I do if I have a disability that may affect my performance during the selection process?
Please contact us if you feel that we may need to make reasonable adjustments to assist your application.

Graduate Scheme

If I’m successful when can I expect to start work?
Our graduate intake normally commences in September/October.

Do you pay relocation expenses?
Yes. We provide a relocation package to help you set up home in a new area if we ask you to relocate.  Generally our relocation arrangements ensure you are never out of pocket if asked to move by the company.

How mobile do I have to be?
You must be prepared to work in any of our stores throughout the UK, both to take up your initial appointment and also to progress your career.

What is the salary and other benefits?
The initial salary is £19,500.  You can expect this to increase rapidly as you progress your career.  A typical trainee can expect to be earning £35k plus car after 2 to 3 years.  Other benefits include pension and life assurance benefits, relocation assistance and staff discount.

What does the programme involve?
The training is structured but very hands-on.  The focus is on early responsibility and feedback on performance to allow trainees to develop knowledge and skills.

How will my performance be assessed?
Trainees are given quantitative targets but are also given feedback on specific competencies.

How long does the programme last?
The first stage leading to the first management appointment lasts between 9 and 12 months depending on your progress.

What position will I be working towards?
We recruit graduate trainees with the expectation of them achieving a senior management position in the business.

Are there opportunities to travel or work in other locations around the world?
Although we do not specifically recruit for overseas positions as part of an international group our established managers do have opportunities to work abroad.

Do I have to wear a uniform?
Yes, you will be provided with a management uniform.

What are the typical working hours?
Working hours are determined by your training and responsibilities at any particular stage.  A junior manager will typically work between 40 and 45 hours per week.

Will I get to meet the other graduates?
Yes. It is important that you are part of the graduate trainee group.  You will meet frequently during your traineeship and trainees tend to keep in contact and are supportive of each other as they progress through the business.
